what’s wrong with my 1991 ford f150

i have a 91 ford f-150 with a 5.8. when i start it  
it makes a loud hum for a second then i will
put it in gear it will die. it does fine when i put
it in drive but when i put it in reverse it dies
but will eventually take off after a few try’s. i’m
young and just need some answers! thanks in
advance

i took it to a family member that works on classic vehicles. he said it was a bad fuel pump and had a leak in the vacuum hose.
