1992 Ford F150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, my 92 F150 won't start. Symptoms are similar to a dead
or low battery, but battery voltage is good.
There was A LOT of corrosion on the positive terminal; I
cleaned it up, and went from getting a solenoid relay click
every attempt to start, to getting only 1 click until I jiggle
wires.
What concerns me most, is a couple of times when trying
to start and the starter solenoid relay did click, sparks shot
from the relay.
I am going to do some multimeter testing in the morning,
bought battery cables (they are not corroded but look pretty
shabby) and a new starter solenoid relay, in case those are
the problems.
I did try shorting across the solenoid relay once, nothing.

Any suggestions of what I should look at/test tomorrow? I
will definitely test continuity and voltage of the battery
cables, and voltage at the starter solenoid relay, but
electrical is not my thing and I don't want to overlook
something important and kill my truck.

your pretty much in the right direction from what I was going to recommend. for a truck that old, ( I have a 96 F 150), I 'd get new battery cables too. replacing the starter solenoid was going to be my recommendation. As far as the battery is concerned... replace them about every 4 years and keep water out of it ( water does NOTHING but eats cells, so put in distilled water if anything). Felt ring goes on terminal and after attaching cable, a good slap of vaseline will keep corrosion away usually. good luck, 5,8 litre

take a look at your junk yards. I find brand new parts in cars ALL the time. you could easily find what you just mentioned brand new at any junker

Try taking starter out and have it tested...it may b sticking. If u know how u can test it itself on ground. If not an auto store can teat it

Thanks everyone; I couldn't get at the ground strap, or whatever the negative battery cable terminates at down at the engine block (could not see or feel the end); ended up peeling back more insulation on the existing cables and found pretty clean areas so ended up cutting and stripping with just enough left to reconnect and not be to taut. Changed the starter solenoid relay and battery terminals because they were in rough shape, and the truck started right up. I'll change the cables later on when I have more time to work on it, but for now it's running great!
