Avalanche acts like it is out of gas

Asked by Guru66L4J Apr 03, 2020 at 10:30 AM about the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 02 avalanche started sputtering acting like it
was out of gas going down the highway. After
pulling over and putting gas in it ran fine for about
5 miles then started again. I pulled over and let it
cool down 10 minutes or so and drove another
three to five miles and it did it again. Is this the fuel
pump or could it be a fuel filter please help

It could be either of those things. Testing the fuel pressure should tell you if its the pump and, if the fuel filter is ancient like it is on most vehicles, a new one is a good idea anyway. You'll need one anyway if you change the fuel pump. After that, scan it for trouble codes to see what the computer has to say.

Did you ever figure out the issue my truck is doing the same thing. I got a mass air flow code so I replaced it and it stopped but now it's doing it again. It's seems as if it is only doing it tho when it is hot out. .

Scan it again to see if there's anything new. I'm guessing you've done that though. Spend some time going throught the wiring to make sure all connections are clean and tight. Make sure all ground points are clean and tight as well. Often components are failing because of the wiring leading to them. Modern electrical systems are very sensitive to weak or poor connections. Of course if its an older truck there could be other electrical components that re failing as well.
