The light illuminates on the dash for a couple of reasons. The battery is low or the alternator is not charging the battery sufficiently. The fact the light stays on after the key is removed would appear to indicate a relay activating the dash light may be stuck. I do not have a schematic for your vehicle, but that would seem to indicate the problem. Check the voltage on the battery with the engine off. It should read about 12.4 volts. If that reading is good, then start the vehicle and check again, it should read around 14+ volts.
