Torque Converter or Transmission ?

Asked by Ronnie Dec 22, 2014 at 05:16 PM about the 1997 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD LB

Question type: General

Today on the way to work I was driving along and I felt the engine rev up a little.  I
thought it could have been ice so I slowed down and engaged the 4wd.  A few miles
later it did it again and it was definitely the drivetrain not engaging.  I slowly revved
the motor a few times and the truck slowed slightly and then it re-engaged.  I'm
suspecting perhaps the torque converter or perhaps overdrive.  I checked the fluid and
the level was good.  Drove 20 more miles into work with no more issues so far. Any
suggestions or thoughts ?

Could be what you suspect. Has the transmission been serviced since new?

I bought it 2 years ago with 140k. I was told it had regular service performed but I can't be so sure. I have not had it serviced since then. Since it shifts fine, I'm suspecting converter.

As Tom suggested I recommend you bring it to a transmission shop for diagnosis. However I would add to stay away from national chains and big box concerns. Their diagnosis always seems to be a rebuilt tranny.
