1998 Ford F-150 4X4 3 door extended cab 4.6 liter fuel pump not working, how do I find the wheelbase size to replace it

Asked by timsolady Dec 10, 2011 at 12:12 PM about the 1998 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD Extended Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have checked the module, the relay, the shut off switch and all are working. So its got to be
the fuel pump.
It had trouble starting, finally started and went down the road, started sputtering and died.
Started again, same thing. Now it won't start at all.

Not sure if it is an SB or an LB

Well it turns out it was the fuel pump. My husband and brother ended up fixing it themselves after being quoted $450 plus towing to a shop. I thought it was high but after they got done fixing it, they said it would have been worth paying someone the $450 to do it. It was definitely a 2 man job, we also had just filled up with gas the day before this happened and the fuel tank is made so that it cannot be syphoned out. So they used a jack and lowered the whole gas tank out of there and replaced the fuel pump. It took probably 5 hours to complete the job and they were filthy by the time they were done but it fired right up afterwards and haven't had a problem since.

Random trivia SB means 6 or 6 1/2ft Short Bed, LB means 8ft Long Bed just saying because you said you weren't sure.

I had this problem where the truck would start sometimes and then it wouldn't. It turned out to be the ENERTIA switch under the dash. Frank H
