98 F150 won't engage in a gear
Asked by Shack82 Jun 20, 2017 at 10:06 PM about the 1998 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD Extended Cab LB
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Shifter moves freely through all gears, hear a little whine
when in a gear but only engages occasionally and only for
a short period of time. Started when I buried it in the
mud. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

How does sludge get into a transmission, transfer case and differential. Water maybe but mud? My guess is a transfer case issue.
Automatic, mud was dry not like soupy. Appreciate the help.

The 4R70/AODE trans is known for having a very weak Direct drum and bearing assembly. The back and forth rocking could easily have broken the bearing. Causing the direct drum to move around between the ring gear and planet assembly. This will starve the Direct clutches and cause the trans to whine and not have any gears.
