Shifter won't go into 1st or 2nd. I just put in a new set of shifter cakes in my car. Since then I haven't been able to put my car into 1st or 2nd. It only hits 3rd through 5th and reverse.

The shifter doesn't seem to want to go far
enough to the left to slide it into gear. I have
no idea what's wrong and it's bothering me
and my friend. We have no idea why it is
doing this. Happened immediately after
changing the shifter cables.

check you operation manual or a diagram of the linkage, examine the linkage and check the linkage against a picture or diagram, at your local shop, the technician should be able to diagnose and fix the malfunctioning shifter at a reasonable price around $100 bucks for this.
I have a repair manual and there is nothing about the cables or shifter in it. I went page by page and didn't find a thing. :( trying to avoid at the moment spending any more money on this.
Go to Auto-Zone's web site,, they have diagrams and manuals for almost every car ,,,free
having a similar problem just replaced clutch, pressure plate, and slave cylinder, now the car wont go into 1,3,and 5, but 2 4 and reverse work fine. hoping the cables are out of adjustment after fishing around trying to get the transaxle back in. a major pain in the butt when working outside, not in a shop. i have heard my problem could also be not having the clutch bled enough.
however, it doesnt grind at all, the shifter simply wont go into those gears.
Did you ever figure this out? I'm having same problem!
