clicking noises

Asked by LITTLE Oct 12, 2019 at 08:10 PM about the 1999 Ford F-150 Lariat Extended Cab Stepside SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 1999 f150 with a 5.4 triton, so i was driving down the road one day and all of a sudden my gauges shot up then down and died in the middle of the road and when i tried to start it, all it would make is a clicking noise. all my fluids were fine, i didnt hear anything except a pop before my gauges went crazy. i just put a new battery in it and it just makes one click when i turn the key, everyone says i need a new motor but i'm just trying to figure out exactly what is wrong instead of buying a new motor.

I was thinking it could be the starter or alternator, the truck has been sitting for over a year but I just put in the new battery yesterday and it has like 193k miles on it which is why most people think it's the motor but I was just trying to find other options to look at besides a new motor. Thanks for your replies, I really appreciate it and I'll look into that this week
