Question type: Maintenance & Repair
2002 cavalier won't start. No crank. Lights
work. Makes kinda of a crackling sound
when trying to crank. Noise seems to be
coming from right in front of dash under the
hood.

Check battery voltage, should be 12.4vdc minimum. If battery is ok, check battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight. If all cables are ok, Check for voltage at the starter solenoid small terminal when you try to start it.
Went out today. Started right up. I notice the ignition is hard to turn. You have to hit a sweet spot to turn. Can ignition cause the problem with starting?
Definitely. Get the ignition switch replaced ASAP
How hard is it to change ignition
Here's a link to a video on how to replace it https://youtu.be/2YCfPaHa7V0
OK. So why did you tell me at part store the cheapest switch is $176. Says it has a chip in ignition. But everything I see says nothing about a chip
Sorry I meant why did parts guy tell me
Your car does not have a chip in ignition. The ignition switch for your 2002 Cavalier is about $20
Now I'm more confused. Parts guy said it sounds like ignition lock cylinder which is like $150. How do I know if it's switch or lock cylinder. It will turn when it hits sweet spot. Sometimes it starts other times nothing
Also. If it is cylinder is there a way to bypass
Your ignition switch includes the cylinder. Attached is a google link, it varies from $20 to $206, depending on what yours looks like. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=2002+chevrolet+cavalier+ignition+switch
Well took to shop. As luck would have it I have the $175 ignition. Then has to to be keyed by dealer. Another $60-80 for that plus labor.. So my question is have often will starting problem be. I've drive it last couple days and it's started Everytime. But when it does finally not start is it going to be 2-3 turns to start or could it be up to 20 tries or more?
