Won't idle

Asked by Sonya Apr 19, 2017 at 07:46 AM about the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It all started when the trac off and check
engine lights came on. It was shifting hard
and wouldn't get over 40 mph. We
replaced spark plugs and fuel filter. Did
nothing. Had it scanned and it said it was
the o2 sensor. Replaced that. Still nothing.
Replaced throttle position sensor and it
was running better but the service engine
and ABS light came on. Replaced the
computer, now there are no lights on but it
dies if you let off the gas, it won't idle. Any
suggestions?

Should have started with the ABS codes. So now that you replaced the computer, was it flashed with the vin number of the vehicle? The computer would have needed to be flashed.

What does that mean? Sorry but the only way I'm getting any help is if I do the research and tell someone what to do and I know nothing about cars.

Also cleaned the air intake, or at least I think that's what it was. It ran great for awhile now it's back to dying again. Oh and as far as the ABS codes we did, that's why we replaced the O2 sensor

You said you replaced the computer, what computer did you replace? And the ABS codes relate to the Anti Lock Brake System. When something is wrong with the ABS system, it throws a code. If there is something wrong with the engine, it throws a engine code. The O2 has nothing to do with the ABS codes, it has to do with a engine light, code. By the sounds of your symptoms, there is a vacuum leak somewhere or a problem with the Air Idle Control Valve.

I'm having the same problems. My car makes a loud noise when I'm about to get over 40 and don't want to shift out.I have replace the harness, ignition coil,o2 sensor and gasket pipe (catalytic converter and bank 2 a/f sensors)

The tolerances on every engine is different, even on the same make and model. The computer is programmed for that specific car. If you pull a computer out of another car and put it in yours without having it flashed, your car will go into anti- theft mode causing you more problems. Flashing is reseting the computer so that it can be reprogrammed to be used in another car. It does take specialty equipment.
