1999 f150 4.2l

Asked by Cbr954rr Dec 31, 2016 at 12:23 PM about the 1999 Ford F-150 XL LB

Question type: General

On 99 f150 4.2l truck will crank over and start
sometimes other times it won't hit with starter fluid
sometimes it will fire and others it takes longer to
start even with starter fluid. Changed the fuel filter
out and throttle position sensor still same deal.
Check the inertia switch it's not tripped. Waiting on
fuel pressure gauge to come in. Is there anything
else anyone can think of. Starts sometimes then
won't has me stumped on y it will then other times
takes quite a few times cranking over to start

Have you checked fuel pressure? fuel regulator? I'm not a fan of starting fluid esp. if you have to keep using a lot of it, it might catch quicker by pouring a little gas down the throttle body. You have a few things you can check: spark, with a spark tester, injector pulse, with a noid light, fuel pressure. If a little gas in the throttle body causes it to start up, then it's the fuel pressure and high on suspect list is regulator. (it's a cheap enough part, I don't normally just swap parts without testing them, but if it's hard to test then swap away and see if it fixes the problem).
