How do I troubleshoot Power Door Locks?

Asked by mawalker3733 Jun 19, 2014 at 01:04 PM about the 2000 Ford F-150 XLT Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The power door locks on my 2000 F150 XLT "try" to lock/unlock, they move, but can't
quite make it! This is both with the remote and with the door switches.

It the problem with both doors, or just one. Sometimes the actuator gets weak or crud and corrosion builds up inside the door. They can be difficult to get to to replace. Try flooding the actuator and locking mechanism with WD 40. It worked for me.

It's both locks. It's possible that there is a mechanical binding on both at the same time, but it is not the most likely scenario. I don't know if these locks are electrical or vacuum driven. Anybody out there know?

It's electrical. And you are right, it is a remote possibility both would get gummed up. You problem may be electrical, maybe a loose ground or power connection. The powers jumps from the drivers side to the passenger side, so a problem on the drivers side could affect the passenger. Check the drivers side connections first. You can also jump a connection from a known good source (like the battery via wire). If it works the problem is in the wiring connection.
