Earlier I posted that my truck wouldn't
start unless I crossed the solenoid. I
was going to leave it until morning so I
had better light but I had to run an
errand. I went to start it by using the
solenoid and now nothing happens
except a short purring/whirring noise
from somewhere under the hood? I
don't know what could have changed
in just a few hours.

When you jumped the solenoid relay on the fenderwell, did you leave it connected. You could have burned out the starter or damaged the cogs on the flywheel.
I didn't leave it connected. It was suggested that possibly the fog lights had caused a dead battery so I unhooked them. My neighbor tried to help me jump it but it Didn't work. Lights and everything else work. Could it be that the battery is just too weak to start the truck? I suspect the main issue is the ignition switch.
Check the battery with a milti-meter. If below 12.4 volts charge the battery with a charger. DO NOT JUMP THE CAR AND TRY TO CHARGE THE BATTERY WITH THE ALTERNATOR. YOU CAN RUIN THE ALTERNATOR. May take several hours or all night. Once you know the battery is good proceed from there with electrical testing.
