Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 f150 with a 4.6l romeo engine. I had a oil leak out of the back of the
passenger side head. so i changed the head gaskets the water pump and the thermastat.
I drove the truck for about an hour and a half pulling a trailer. then all of a sudden the
temp jumped from half way to hot. now I can only drive it for about ten minutes before it
will run hot. If anyone can please help thanks.

Is the coolant level still good? If so the cooling system may need to be purged of air. T-stat could also be bad.

I just took the thermostat out and done the boil test. it looked like it was working like it supposed to. I'm going to replace it any way. can any one tell me the correct procedure to purge all the air out of the system.

To purge the air out simply let the truck warm up for about ten minutes until the thermostat opens (temp gauge moves from the C position). Then add more coolant. You may need to repeat this a couple of times. Then after you drive it for a half hour or more top it off again. Note, the coolant capacity for the 4.6L engine is 20.5 quarts. Also, make sure you are mixing the coolant with water the manual specifies a 50/50 mixture. The manual also warns not to mix different colored coolant and recommends "Motorcraft Premium Gold" (yellow colored).
