It sounds like your low on freon. I'm not sure what the engine temp has to do with anything

Ok , thanks for the response. More Info as , Car has been running a little above normal in temperature . once a month or so add about a half gallon of water, no problem recently the temp needle went all the way up to hot, stopped added about a half gallon of water , it was not steaming and the engine did not appear to be hot , the water in the radiator was not boiling , headed on home and turned the A. C. off , by the time I got home it was showing over heated again, took car to garage ,. mechanic said the only fan of the two out front that was working was the one that comes on when the A. C. is on . He replaced both fans and the radiator and new hoses, over #$400.00. I drove home about 3 miles. no problem. Next morning I go to town and notice the temp needle all the way down on cold and did not come up all then way to town and the A.C. will not come on , fan blows but the compressor does not engage. had the A. C. system rebuilt last year , and has been working good. It is not low in Freon. I replaced the A. C. relay under the hood and the compressor still does not engage. I can short across the relay terminals and the A. C . comes on , the compressor engages and it blows cold air. If I turn the a.c. off while shorted out it does not quit. . This is a 2002 Chevrolet Impala with 100k miles , V6 engine . I bought it new and the wife has put most of the miles on it..
