2002 impala and 1997 gtp transmission swap

Asked by Eibra Sep 20, 2014 at 10:38 AM about the 2002 Chevrolet Impala LS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an Impala with a bad transmission and I have a good transmission from a 1997 gtp.
The only differneces i have found is that the 97 is an hd and runs a 2.93 final drive and my
Impala has a 3.05 final drive and that this gear difference is accomplished with the drive
chain. If I were to swap the drive chains between the 2 would I be good to go? or will i
possibly have other issues?

https://www.gearvendors.com/cgdrive.html .and http://auto.howstuffworks.com/gears.htm ...Those websites explain it better than I can. But bottom line is if everything bolts up and works you will be fine, just a slightly different top speed, slower but better acceleration since the final drive is slower= more torque available, but it's only 0.12 turns of the driveshaft different

Thank you for the response. I am aware as to what the gear ratio would do as far as driveability but I was warned that this would affect my computer negatively since it is not setup for this ratio and that it would also affect my speedometer. Would the different sensors in the transmission make up for this?
