What`s wrong with my 4 wheel drive ?

When turning the dashboard switch the 4 wheel makes some grinding noises but doesn`t quite engage . What needs to be replaced?

I have found that failure to regularly "exercise" the transfer case and the actuator leads to problems engaging 4WD when it is needed. I engage 4WD every week to make sure it works and my truck works perfectly after 216,000 miles. My wife's 4x4 has had problems because she would not engage 4WD occasionally. Once I started "exercising" the system it went back to working properly.
