From owners manual: Manual Transmission a. 5-Speed (2.2L Engine) b. 5-Speed (4.3L Engine) a. DEXRON-IIE Automatic Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. 1051855). b. Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (GM Part No. 12345349).
with higher mileage you may want to change to 30 weight motor oil for standard trans. (adjusted lighter or heavier, relative to climate) heavy oil in cold will cause difficult shift until warmed.
I just drained my 5-speed manual transmission on my 1999 S10 with the 2.2 L engine, 186K miles, for the first time. I refilled it with the GM-Synchromesh h fluid, WOW, what a difference, the gear are really slick now, shift with ease... HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE GM-SYNCHROMESH FLUID... !
