my 1997 S10 2.2 liter will start and Idol and
then dies why is it not getting fuel

From my personal experience and I'm not a mechanic but have done a lot of work with them and the problem you might have it your truck fires and won't stay running can possibly be a clogged fuel filter, or possibly a bad fuel pump. I'm not a mechanic but those are the two things I would check first

Yes the things Bolt_1280 mention should be checked. Also it may be due for a tune-up, but in the mean time try cleaning the MAF-Sensor. located in the air intake tube to the throttle body. Use MAF spray cleaner to do this, and clean the throttle body with some carb cleaner. If the check engine light is on then have the vehicle scanned for any trouble codes and write them down for further assistance.
