Why are my RPMs so high but the speed/power so low?

Asked by BroncoSoldier Aug 02, 2015 at 01:19 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet S-10 LS Wide Stance Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 S10, 4.3l V6, 133000 miles, and just recently when I press the accelerator
the RPMs sky rocket, sometimes to 4500, but the gain in speed is very slow. Going up
hills is also a problem as I have to keep the RPMs very high just to maintain current
speed. It starts and idles perfectly, I just don't have any power.
The last repair I made was to replace the water pump about 5 years ago. Other than that
it has just been routine maintenance.

Firebird338 is right on. Either you are low on fluid or you need repairs on the tranny.

Transmission is slipping. Check the fluid, if it is full the transmission needs repairs.
