2004 s-10 4WD light on but 4WD not working

Asked by hawaiijoe Mar 21, 2014 at 12:35 AM about the 2004 Chevrolet S-10 LS Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had the vehicle in 4WD and pushed the button to switch back to 2WD.  It went back into 2WD but the indicator light says 4WD.  No matter which button I push it says 4WD, but it is still in 2WD.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I was going to take it to a shop.  We are on an island in Hawaii and the first appointment is 3 weeks from now.

There is a vacuum assisted diaphragm/actuator that engages the front differential that is located in the engine compartment. These freeze up or there could be a vacuum leak which could be the cause. If it's locked in 4 wheel drive, it sounds more like a mechanical problem. Check out this video for more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP0jhBG0jv4
