Could my transmission be bad or is it something else?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 4x4
360. When the transmission is cold it
will take off but once it warms up it
doesn't want to pull off. I can put it in
4high and it will move for a little bit
then it stops. The pump in the
transmission will make a loud noise
when it is in gear but when i put it in
park it stops. I was told to drop the
pan and check the strainer to see if it
is stopped up. The fluid smells burnt
once it is warm. Anybody know that
could be wrong?

Thanks. I'm just trying to get it where I can drive it again for at least a little while. I just don't get why it will move when it's cold but won't move to much when it's warms up. All the ones I have drive when the trans goes it just won't move at all. That's 99.9% of the time they won't go at all they will just sit there like it's in park or natural when u go through all the gears. My truck ain't like that it will move

I ran out of transmission fluid in my 1998 1500 dodge. Do you think that I damaged the transmission?
