With something like this you might want to take truck to someone who has an OBD 1 diagnostic tool. What you spend on this could be less than guessing and buying parts. A few things that come to mind are IAC, TPS low fuel pressure. Not sure where you live, but here we have a shop that will hook you up live diagnostic for $40.

Also should mention to hook up a vacuum gauge to engine and check your engine vacuum. At idle you should have 18 -20 psi. More is better with vacuum. A reading of close to 20 with a steady needle is optimum.
Sounds like your torque converter clutch to me, does it die all the time or only when in gear?
have your tried a fuel filter there cheap and easy to install not to mention there just one of those things you just replace just to stay on the safe side so it never hurts to replace it
Fuel filter is not servicable on these trucks. I agree on the possibility of the Torque Converter Clutch if the transmission is engaged when the problem shows up in idle. I know it is in reverse but its an indication of a fuel or ignition problem if in neutral or park. I had a Dodge Aspen with a bad TCC in 78 that drove me nuts until we figured it out! Good Luck!
