Transmission has only reverse and 1st gear

Asked by 97Dodgeman Jan 28, 2019 at 12:55 PM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT Club Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 with an automatic
46re transmission.  First Drive gear slipped and
then stopped working,  a few minutes later 2nd did
the same.  So I only have reverse and 1st when
manually shifted into 1st. I checked fluids and it
had too much fluid in it.
Can I save this transmission?

Don't waste time trying 22 years old....with how many miles? If the trucks beat try and locate a lower mileage salvage transmission. IF you stored it in the garage all these years all its in great condition replace the transmission with a crate remanufactured unit.
