leak between trans and transfer case
I have a 1997 dodge ram 4x4 . there is transmission fluid leaking from between the transmission and the transfer case. is there a seal or is there just a gasket between the two? tomdel40@yahoo.com
There are seals but a little fluid doesn't hurt anything. Is it dripping or just moist? No drip - no leak. Because of the weight of and torque delivered through the transfer case, the bolts between the two often loosen over time. They both use ATF. This phenomenon is very common among off-roaders because they pound their vehicles with this odd- shaped device hanging off of their transmissions in full out 4x4 Low. I check mine on my F-250 yearly along with the rest of the 4x4 equipment whether I go off road or not.
it is leaking, dripping so much if I look at it for more than a min. I can see it drip. it is leaving a puddle un the truck
Well then, time to pull it apart. The 2 units do not share oil. Hopefully, it's just a seal. When you get the two units apart, check for play in the output shaft of the Transmission. If it wiggles up and down a lot, you may need some tranny work. I hope not because a seal replacement won't fix a worn output shaft bushing or a Low/Reverse Drum.

It's an adapter. The transfer case is generic - made by a different company than Dodge (usually New Process).
SEAL REPLACEMENT Raise vehicle. Disconnect or remove components necessary to gain access to seal (e.g. propeller shaft, crossmember, shift linkage, transfer case, exhaust components, hoses, wires). Remove dust shield and remove seal from adapter housing. Install new seal with appropriate size seal installer and install dust shield. Reinstall components removed to gain access to seal. Top off transmission fluid if necessary.

is there a seal between the 4wd adaptor housing and the transmission or jus a gasket. I drained the transmission and the transfer case but it still seems to be leaking between the transfer case and the 4wd adaptor case.
Hey I just bought a 2002 dodge pickup 4*4v8 1500 .it had no oils at all in it min anything.so I put transmission fluid in and its spilling out as quick as it goes in.where the transmission meets the block?

Tracy, I know this is an old thread but I hope you can answer for me. Is there suppose to be fluid in the adapter housing? I assume so since there is a seal but I appear to have atf coming out of the bolt holes where the crossmember mount attaches. Maybe there is a crack inside the holes but I can’t see it.
