transmission trouble!

I'm putting in the trans on a ram1500 5.9 liter , i got the motor from a scrap yard. I'm haveing trouble with the
converter, bell housing is lined up and bolted but when i turn the converter to line up holes the motor turns to? is this
normal? former ford owner.

Three things I can think of, the convertor is not fully seated into the tranny pump, the engine might have a different flywheel (not likely but possible) or you dont have the metal "shim" installed between the motor and tranny.

Sam hit it on the first one. When the converter is fully seated there should be at least 1/8" clearance between the flexplate and nutplates.

the converter should turn freely if it is seated properly in the tranny with play in it to line up the flywheel
