How many wires should go to the emmision plug checker for inspection?

Not sure I understand your question. But, the scan tool has a single multiwire cable with connector to fit all from 1998 and later vehicles with OBDII systems. Prior to that, there are individual adapters and scanners for type of system installed in the vehicle.
