Check gages light keeps coming on
Asked by Guru9CJFD Jun 26, 2017 at 04:26 PM about the 1998 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 98' Dodge ram 1500 4x4. This past week
the "check gages" light has begun coming on
everytime I come to a stop. When this happens, my
oil pressure drops to 0 then normalizes. I recently
lost my father and inherited this truck from him.
So, I don't know much about it yet. The oil pressure
seems to stay around 25. There is no where at my
house anywhere near level enough to check the oil.
I know it hasn't had an oil change in a while. About
6,000 miles. I'm hoping just a quart or two of oil
will get it by until I can change it.

the check gauges light tells you that one of them is registering something out of the ordinary. if you getting engine noise with the low pressure stop using it. check your oil level somehow before you add oil, extra oil is not good. assuming oil level is good and no engine noises, I would then look at the oil pressure switch, which is usually located near the oil filter
I have the same issue, Since it's an older truck it burns oil, About a month after i do an oil change when it driving the pressure stays at about 40, but when i stop at a light it will drop to zero and flashes check gauges. My only solution was to add oil and it stops since i known the truck burns oil.

I had the same problem as OP. (2006 Ram 1500) Got the oil pressure switch replaced on advice of my mechanic and it didn’t stop the problem. What’s my next step?
I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 and sometimes the check gauge light comes on. But it eventually goes off. Can you please tell me what is the problem?
