Truck stalling out

Asked by DR99_1500_v8 Oct 08, 2019 at 05:28 AM about the 1999 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT Club Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 99' Dodge ram 1500 v8 magnum will start then
sometimes well before the day I had the huge
issue. It would just die no warning at all just die
gauges down , engine stopped. I would pull over
stop. Reset to park then restart it and it would
start right back up then wouldn't have the issue for
another let say couple months or so then
samething. Die and then stop and restart. Drive
away just fine did that for about a 9to 10months
since last November when it first started. Then one
day it just all of sudden died after awhile of no
issues then instead of turning over right away and
be on my way. It just cranked and cranked and
cranked but no complete start up. But after let's
say 20 to 30min of it sitting it would start up and
that was the first time it did that and that was in
May then around the beginning of June or so it did
it again but this time when after the wait time of
20minor so went by and it started up again it did it
again after driving for a few mins or miles and die
again. So that day I was trying to get to work get
off pick up my check make it to the bank and auto
parts store for new fuel relay. It kept dying every
where I went then start back up few mins later to
20mins did that everywhere i went and so now I
can't drive my truckwithout worrying about it
stalling on me after start up and driving down the
road for 15 20mins. So it just sits outside my
house. Need my truck back and trying to see if
anyone has any feedback or answers or questions.
Please lmk cause I'm racking my brain trying to pin
point this issue. I did have check light on and now it
went off and one reader won't catch any codes so
can't tell from that. I tried changing out crank shaft
position sensor but that's not it . Thinking it might
be the cam shaft Sensor or fuel pump but I do
have alright pressure when I check regulater on
fuel rail pump is making whirring sound when on
position but can't hear it when engine is running. I'm
still trying to figure out what's going on. So please
anything . Need knowledgeable tips to figure this
out. I'm hoping it'd just a relay malfunction....
Thanks

You seem to be hitting on the major problem causes and all that aside. Outside the box time...1) try driving around with the gas cap off n see if there's a change, 2) clean the idle air control valve on the throttle body, 3)Know wachur ECM knows and operates on...hook up a scanner that reads live data, whachur lookin' for is long n short term fuel trims whilst driving, coolant temp and intake air temp, 4)check for a clogged catalytic converter, and 5) check all your grounds with an ohm meter (you should have less than an volt difference between battery ground and engine and/or body ground. That's a good start.
