When you turn off over drive, your car doesnt use its final gear that means of your car has 5 speed its only using 4 speed.over drive is very important for better fuel efficiency.
that and engine life. Does your O/D have an on/off button? I ask b/c I will try to find schematic
Sorry Elder I got myself in a bind trying to answer too many questions at the same time. Just seems a lot if stuff I happen to know all hit. My "areas". I will keep trying

Fact is GM is NOT one of my 'areas' more Ford and Toyota but I'm trying...this is 1999...click to size them up
On this one I see 'overdrive clutch test port' now I have to figure out what that means or ask for the Calvary...Jim??

what would cause the transmission temperature light to come on and it isn,t hot.Do i have to change the computer? The overdrive want engage on the shift cable, where is the button on the column?
I'm having the same problem with my 01' Dodge Ram. Tran Temp light comes on and O/D turns off while driving maybe, 10-20miles . It can't be turned on with button. After it sits all night, the O/D comes back on fine. All solenoids and speed sensor have been changed. Still does it. Any ideas?
Our 2000 dodge ram 1500 does the same exact thing have u been able to find out what was causing this problem email at danielle36maine@gmail.com
The truck shifts fine and 20 minutes after driving I lose my overdrive and it won't go back on and a few minutes later the transmission temperature light comes on and if I shut the truck off for 30 minutes it's fine until I drive again for 20 minutes and it repeats ever time any suggestions we changed the filter and drained all the fluid and put new atf + 4 in .
Hey Danielle...Did you ever figure out what was going on with your truck....My dodge 1500 3.9 2wd is doing the same thing..

This is an old post, but for those who are still researching this issue.. I started out with a CEL of TCC Solenoid failure. I replaced all solenoids in the transmission valve body of my 2000 dodge ram 1500 5.2 rwd. I was left not being able to shift out of first gear and the speedometer wasn't registering speed. So, I replaced the transmission output speed sensor. No luck. I then replaced the speed sensor on the differential for the rear. Was able to shift into all gears. A couple days later, O/D turns off on it's own again and get a trans temp light in a couple more miles. After extensive research, I found that the trans cooler line running off the bottom of the aux trans cooler (passenger side of radiator) has a built in check valve. I took it off, cleaned it and ran my air compressor through it. No air was coming out of check valve. This check valve is like a pre-filter and vacuum pump to clean debris and pressurize the fluid to keep fluid flowing to the torque converter and clutch. Luckily for me, the local advance auto had replacement in stock. I switched to new line. Pulled the fuel relay fuse and cranked the engine for 10 secs. Checked and topped off trans fluid. Put the relay back in, cranked the truck and took it down the road. I've been driving it now for a few days and the o/d / trans temp issue hasn't come back. This might not be the issue with everyone's truck, but it is pretty common. Hope this helps.
