Advantages / Disadvantages of installing lower temp themostat

Have 2000 Ram 1500 4X4 160,xxx on her, Will be replacing thermostat this weekend and wondering of any advantages or disadvantages of doing this.
What Ive been told:
Allows heater to "engage" sooner
Will get less gas mileage due to engine temp.
What are your thoughts

yes it is true, plus it will cause more wear on your engine. Stick to OEM temperature themostat
