Why do I have no bus intermittently?

Asked by Plumberhgj3 Aug 28, 2021 at 05:00 PM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I modified my cluster, well just put led red lights in
it and sanded the back of the instrument labels so
that that the red showed three where I wanted it
too. Turned out pretty good. Anyway everything
has been working fine. Even upgraded the head
unit that's red to match the cluster. Again
everything worked fine for about 4 weeks later I
was running late to work and drove it pretty close
to empty but the low fuel warning didn't turn on
until I made it to town. Shut it off fueled up and
started fine. About a block away the truck just quit
Like I shut off the ignition. I pulled over thinking
maybe I ran so empty I over heated the fuel pump
but it didn't act like a normal fuel pump failure no
sputter nothing it was like hitting the kill switch in a
race car. So I sat there and noticed the fuel gage
was on E but my ignition was on. As I was on the
phone with a tow company the truck ding then fuel
gage went to full. So I turned it over and it started
up..and drove it to work. After work got in it fired
right up. Drove about 20 miles almost home and it
did it again doing 80 mph on the interstate. Sitting
there again fuel gage was on E and about 5
minutes later ding then fired up when before when
it said E it would spin over but no fire. I have gone
threw all fuses and cleaned panels with electronic
cleaner. Fired right up. Go out in the am no fire.
Come home after hot day. Fire right up. But now it's
hit or miss. If I let it sit with ignition on for awhile it
will eventually start. All other gages show normal.
But fuel. Like I said I have check all fuses and
relays all seem to work. Only thing is I don't hear
the pump prime up with ignition just turned on. But
when the gauge reads right I can hear the pump
prime and it fires. I'm confused as to what's going
on here.
