2001 dodge 1500 wont run off the alternator

Asked by Jordan Jun 05, 2021 at 01:30 PM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 ST Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck`s battery died so replaced it and checked the alternator by
disconnecting the battery positive terminal. No surprise when it shut off. So I
put a new alternator on and it still failed to run without the battery connected.
The only notable event prior to any of this is was removing the alternator to
get to the thermostat housing and when I was disconnecting the cords from
the back of the (old) alternator. When disconnecting the wire from the
positive terminal to the alternator. The wire had fallen on to the the engine
block causing it to make an connection and spark.

Note the wiring diagram. Make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good. Disconnecting the battery with engine running is a no--no on todays vehicles. The bat terminal at the generator is hot all the time, even with key off. Use a test light to check for voltage. as you can see in diagram, that circuit is fuse protected, check the fuse. Check for applicable trouble codes relating to charging system. I could go on talking about generator wiring circuits, but, I tend to ramble, so I'll stop. good luck
