when is it recommended to change the timing chain for a 2003 dodge ram 1500 laramie with a 5.7L engine?

Timing chains are supposed to last the life of the vehicle, but, in some cases they get stressed and make lots of noise and power decreases. It's a lot more involved changing the timing chain than a belt, usually more costly. Car complaints has more information, they label it a clunker, so, maybe getting rid of it is a good idea? Finding chain should be chainged around 100000 m in most dodge becouse that slap so hard. And if it slips or break it is by by motor.

I wouldn't change it if it is not making noise.

In my experience, put a timing light on it to check timing, if a chain has stretched you will see the timing mark bounce around the mark. A good chain, for lack of words, your timing mark on the crank balancer will show consistent to the mark on the timing tab. Also as Bob answered don't worry about it if it is not making noise.

its not so much the timing chain, but the slider tensioner fail as mine has done at 190,000 miles.

GuruXGW, there is no tensioner on this one, just some guides that have no pressure onto the chain.

I got a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 is got a v6 its the motor size fun times it was hard to Crank it up what could be wrong with it is it the timing belt or timing chain

Timing belts are meant to be replaced every 100k miles because it’s made from cheaper material and not from steel metal. If you change your motor oil regularly your timing chain should last the life of your truck unless your hammering the gas peddle every time the light turn green then the chain may jump a tooth or so and throw off the timing or stretch the timing chain.

I not have any noise but have chech engine light on I yes change tha cam sensor crank sensor and tha vvt selenoid and feling like lost power
