how do i put my 2004 dodge ram into four wheel drive?

Asked by teb1773 Jul 11, 2012 at 01:34 PM about the 2004 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Quad Cab LB 4WD

Question type: General

I just bought a 2004 Dodge Ram yesterday.  When I placed the truck in neutral (with my foot on the brake) and then switched to 4 wheel drive it made a grinding noise.  Am I doing this wrong?  My last 4-wheel drive vehicle (Trailblazer) simply had a little switch that I would turn while in neutral. Any comments would be appreciated

You should be in drive and moving when you shift into 4H. I believe it's up to 50mph. When shifting into 4L you will want to be stopped and the vehicle in neutral. Hope this helps.

It called shift on the fly 4X4 canalbreath is correct. You should check your manual for max speed in 4X4 High.
