2004 Dodge Ram 1500 lifter arm?

Asked by Andrew Mar 16, 2016 at 08:48 PM about the 2004 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 V8 4.7 and it makes a horrid clanking sound
whenever it is running. we took it to the shop and they said the lifter arm
had been tossed (something to that effect) and they said we needed a new
rebuilt engine. we opted to not get a rebuilt engine and it has been running
quite flawlessly, aside from a pretty heavy oil leak. however this clanking
noise is very concerning and rather annoying. could it be as simple as
putting in a new lifter arm? please let me know if anyone has any
suggestions or comments. Thank you

There has to be more to this than just a rocker arm, like there is a reason for this to happen. The motor must be missing also. If it were mine and replacing the rocker arm was not going to work, then I would pull the intake off and look to replacing the lifter. But it may be that the cam lobe is wore too much for the lifter, push-rod, & rocker arm to open the valve. Just would have to check it out.

Looking at the internal workings of that motor, the guy probably figures it would be a ton of labor to fix, and it looks like it would, so then you would be better off with a rebuilt engine, especially if there is a lot of miles on yours. I see them for about $3200 for a long block.
