why am i losing power while towing?

Asked by Billy Jul 29, 2015 at 02:33 PM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 ST Quad Cab LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram diesel Cummings with 154,000 miles. Lately if I try and tow my 28ft travel trailer it loses power. At first it was only when I went up hills but now it happens on flat roads. The other day it started blowing black smoke while I was towing also. Any help would be appreciated.

It needs to go to a diesel mechanic. Could be anything from a plugged fuel filter to a defective fuel pump to a bad turbo charger. Impossible to say from here. Best of luck with it.
