Don't know really if it is the real axle or what is
going on heard a pop in the rear end and I can't
drive forward with out it making a horrible noise
can reserve it but not put it in drive or it makes a
horrific noise in the rear

Well you blew something in the differential. It would have to be towed where-ever to be fixed.
"Pop" in your rear end? It's probably gas and a dose of Maalox or GasX might help.
It was hilarious and besides the best answer was already selected so I had nothing to motivate me. Rear end is likely gone. Check the fluid and I'll bet it has chunks of metal in it.
FYI, I did a differential swap on my 07 Crown Vic and it's not difficult if you have the Chilton's guide and belong to an online group for your vehicle. It cost me about $400 in parts to replace everything including the spline and pinion. You can get an assembled differential online, and all of the plates and shims as a kit.
"micah" if you replaced the guts of the rear end then it still needs to be shimmed for proper side to side clearance and the pinion depth needs to be checked. Also the contact pattern needs to be checked for proper gear mesh. Pretty sure you already know this, just posting this information for others. A rear gear repair is not a good do it yourself job. An entire rear axle assembly is a much easier less technical project.
