Transmission problems

Asked by Joe Jan 01, 2023 at 01:47 PM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Ram 2500 4x4 with a 5.7
hemi and RFE 545 transmission.  I have
been having tranny issues where I have
had the transmission rebuilt 4 times
and then the 5th time a completely
different transmission was rebuilt. The
transmission cooler was replaced
twice and the ECM replaced once.  The
solenoid block has also been replaced
four times.

The issues I am having are that when
the truck is put under load it will start
to throw codes that the transmission is
having improper gear ratios in most, if
not all, gears.  It is also throwing codes
of improper torque converter pressure,
P0700 millivolt code and improper
pressure code.

This has caused it to overheat and
pressurize the transmission to push
fluid out of it.  As a result, it will cause
the transmission to no longer be able
to move the truck. I have to wait until
the tranny cools down and reset the
computer to have no codes to get it to
it to move and shift properly again. If I
baby the transmission, it seems to shift
fine unless I take it on long drives of 2
hours or more and then the same
codes will pop up and overheat.

If anyone has experienced something
similar to this, I would greatly
appreciate any input on this matter.
The transmission shop that I brought it
to has honored their warranty and
completed the work described above.
However, at this point I have to look
elsewhere to see if this issue is being
caused by something else that we
cannot figure out. Please feel free to
forward my concern to anyone that
may be able to help resolve this issue.
Thanks for any help or input you can
provide.

I have seen this a couple of times, most were fixed by rerouting the transcooler to a stand alone heavy duty transmission cooler, with sever duty even went with a fan forced cooler. The other times were bad rebuild components in other words aftermarket components and we all know how Chrysler products act with aftermarket parts, they don’t like them. So that is what I have seen, hope this gave you something to think about.

Thank you for your input but the cooler and hoses have been changed twice

Hi Joe. My personal opinion is you should cut your losses and move on at this point. The vehicle is 17 years old and you've had it repaired multiple times with no success. You're throwing good money after bad that could be better spent on a newer vehicle that wants to run. If I had to guess though, I'd suspect an electrical problem or a transmission fluid temperature sensor problem. When the transmission fluid is cold it's thicker so the computer reduces the pressure of the fluid circulating in the transmission. As the fluid warms up, and thins out some, the computer sees this from the signal from the transmission fluid temperature sensor, pressure is increased to keep the transmission operating smoothly. If the computer is getting the wrong information from the temperature sensor, or no signal, it defaults to a maximum pressure situation to prevent damage to the transmission from lack of fluid. Good luck to you and I hope this helps! Jim

Then the only other thing is they are getting bad or incorrect parts.

The lucky thing about the situation is the transmission shop is honoring the warranty and it is a very reputable shop so it has not really cost me extra money thankful and I will also look into the sensor because I do believe it is a sensor or something of that nature cuasing the issue and if I had the money to get a newer vehicle I would. Thanks for your input

You might check with the transmission shop and see if they have tried using genuine Chrysler sensors as that seem to be what is messing up
