Car temp goes over 80c and the engine shuts down

Asked by Edward Jun 11, 2022 at 04:43 PM about the 1996 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 220

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car temp is getting above 80c, and when it
gets to around 90, the engine turns off, and all the
lights on the dash come on. After an hour or so, I
can restart the car. If I run the heat, I can keep the
temp at 80c, and I can drive it longer without it
turning off. I replaced the fan clutch with no
results.

Malfunctioning temp sensor will do this as a failsafe to protect engine.. is the car actually overheating? Bubbling boiling noises?

Check coolant levels, and using a laser thermometer, 15.00 wal mart hyper tools . And see if you have a hot top of radiator and cold on the bottom if so it may need a radiator.

Car normal temp is 80c. It is rising over it, then shuts off.
