I don't accualy think it will hurt the elictrical in the car as long as its installed right but yes you will need the dash kit if you change the stereo because the stock radio brackits are too wide for th aftermarket radios. the stock raidos are extreamly bulky and over sized which is why they sell the dash kit but make sure your stereo is compable with the stock speakers otherwise you need to get new speakers whan you install it.
I recently installed a new Alpine into My C280, MY 1999. It won't hurt anything. Just get the proper Mercedes to Alpine harness and splice it onto the alpine head unit then plug it into the Mercedes harness in the car. If your car had the fiber optic cable for the CD changer like mine did, you'll have to change your cd changer to the non fiber optic one from alpine and run a new cable from the head unit to the trunk of the car where the CD Changer resides.
You will have no issues putting in an Alpine, Pioneer or other good radio system. Harness connections to maintain steering wheel functions and dash kits to give it the OEM look are options easily obtainable. Also, if you have fiber optic cable (like my SL does) - there are adapters for that also.
