Octane Raiting

Asked by Jordan Feb 09, 2017 at 09:57 AM about the 2000 Chevrolet Impala LS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The 3800 Series 2 V^ has a 9.4 compression ratio. I've always heard that you
use higher octane to prevent pinging or pre-ignition. I have always used 87
cotane in it but would the engine be better off wth 89 or even 91-93 octane?

If it was designed to run on 87 octane, using higher octane will just make your wallet flatter. There is no benefit to spending more on a higher octane fuel.

The one benefit of running a higher octane fuel is that it burns cleaner, and your injectors stay cleaner.

Disagree with that. Regular and premium fuels have the same additives, brand for brand. Do some reading at the link....http://www.truecar.com/blog/2011/03/03/premium-vs-regular- gas/

From what I read out of this article there Bob, the answer to this question posted here is yes. The main thing is in keeping injectors clean, and the air quality, emissions. Your just going off of the first paragraph of that article, which may be true, but you have to read in-between the lines. Sounds to me there is more befit from running premium gas than not. But one thing is the price of it, and if you don't have to run premium then don't. Its a lot cheaper.

I am not going off of any info in either article. I have direct experience with fuels and additives. I also have a good friend that has been hauling gasoline for about 16 years. There is no benefit running Premium in a vehicle that was designed for Regular. Premium does NOT burn cleaner than Regular. If you run a top tier gasoline at the octane number the manufacturer recommends you are good to go.
