Gear Shift Indicator

Sometimes when I start my car the gear shift indicator
display does not show a gear or it displays the wrong gear
and the car jerks when I shift the gears. And if I attempt to
drive it'll stay in first gear and the check engine light comes
on. Then if I sit still for a while and restart the vehicle, it
then displays the gears and drives normally and the check
engine light goes away after a while. What could be the
issue and the average cost to repair?

Have the code read to determine exactly what the car is telling you. The range of issues is potentially wide, from low fluid to impending transmission controller failure, so get this correctly diagnosed now.
