Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Mercedes has 146k, purchased approximately 45 days ago... Just a few days after purchase "Check Engine" light comes on... Had this problem repaired and car passed emission... Tap, tap started roughly two weeks later...

Engine tap occurs in first three gears on acceleration and transmission shifts and engine brake jumping or lunging of transmission...  Read up and reset transmission memory couple of week ago...

After interstate driving smooth after exit, usually starts after a couple of stop and go's... Sometimes tap at one light and not the next light... Drove Mercedes twice last week (mixed driving) without  tapping noise...

When running right engine purrs, shifts smooth and seems to pick up a few horsepower... Love driving the Mercedes, owned a BMW, Jaguar and this is my first Mercedes... Simply do not want to cause further damage driving the car...

Do not mind spending a few dollars on this car...  Simply do not want to be overcharged for something not necessary... Mercedes is very clean and well kept in garage...

This is a scary story- you have no idea where that car has been or how it was driven- and the Merc is gonna be REAL expensive to repair- whoever sold it to you is REAL happy that they got your cash and you got a Mercedes that has not been maintained and was ready to melt down and cost them some money- and I thought halloween was over-

Ran two car reports, came back positive... Do you have suggestion as to problem or solutions... Could it be a knock sensor, mass air flow valve or simply sucking air somewhere... The noise is very similar to noise a small exhaust manifold leak would make... This was a California car until about two years ago when owner moved to Atlanta... Also please define "real expensive to repair"...

It is quite likely the mass airflow sensor. I had a similar experience and replacing the mass airflow sensor solved the problem.
