Air compressor linked to ignition in '99 SL 500

My AC intermittent and the direction controls not functioning. Was told it was a compressor problem and
the ignition needed to be replaced in order to get AC fully functioning. After paying $1400 the problem
continues. I also did not receive a new key but seems like if ignition was replaced I would need new key.
Does this sound correct?
