I had the same problem with my Audi. I bought a $14.95 LCD (298857 LCD SELF DIMMING MIRROR) mirror from JC Whitney. It clips onto the existing mirror and uses power from the lighter or can attached to the map light.

I have a 2000 SLK that had the same mirror problem, I went to Best Buy and had On star installed, which includes the mirror with onStar, phone, and bluetooth for your cell phone for $99.00 Installed! What a great replacement / upgrade!
