Oil Pressure 2000 Suburban

Asked by lobsterjerry1 May 20, 2016 at 09:37 AM about the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LT RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had a "soft knock" when I started my engine. Was told the old pump was
weak (or possibly failing). Intense labor so I decided to replace the oil
pump, timing chain, all oil related seals to include rear main seal and water
pump (had a coolant leak). Mechanic said it blew the seal he just put in so
replaced the rear main seal Sounds great, run great. No leaks (oil or water)
but mechanic said the oil pressure seems high at idle(45 psi) but normal at
2000 rpm (60 psi). He thinks a spring may be stuck on the new oil pump.
He considers the 45 psi to high and could blow the rear main seal again?
Engine has 287,000 mile on it. Should I be concerned. She runs good and
sounds good! Located in South Florida

45 psi at cold idle I don't see a problem with. Take it on a drive and see what happens. It'll probably drop a little once the engine is good and warm. I don't see a problem.

I wouldn't worry about it as 45 cold idle might be a little high, but not out of this world. I would be curious to know if the mechanic relied on the dash oil pressure gauge for his "pressure measurement" or actually used a pressure gauge taped into the oil system. Factory pressure gauges are notoriously inaccurate.
