It could be that the oil level in the transmission is too low and thus not giving enought pressure to operate the gears.
it could be the fluid level but depending on how many miles are on the trans you could have bad seals and might need a rehaul. but check the fluid level first.
That transmission has electrical valves that are energized when shifted into drive. That would be a the cause. Most important color of fluid,it should be reddish.NOT brownish. If level is low it wouldn't require turning of the key to get it back in gear.It should move, but you would here or feel it slip due to loss of pressure from low fluid level.
It could be your CV axle popping in and out of the trans causing the car not to move very far. I had the same issue with my 5spd 89 LXI I just replaced the whole trans with one from junk yard never had any issue since.
My Honda Accord model 87 when start runing 1st gear change to seond at speed of 20km and the 3rd at 40km and finnaly 4th gear its changed about 55 to 60 km. But problem we are facing for gear shifting I have to remove my foot from excelator for gear shiftin other wise the gears will not be shifted at normal speed. The second problem announing me if put the excelator speed very slowly then gear will down shift to 3rd gear immediately. Please advise .
