My Mom has a 1989 Toyota Corolla DX All-Trac Automatic 4 speed with 20,000 miles on it.  While in the Auto Mode of the All-Trac when backing up or going forward while cutting the wheels to the extreme left or right, there is a  very strong/loud rubbing sound in the axels.  This system is not present in the "Free" mode.  The tires are the original and not worn at all.  What is causing this and should I be worried?  Also, is there absolutely anything wrong or harmful when driving in the "free" mode for everyday driving?  Bob C

sound like the differentials are limmeted slip.. happens on 4 wheel drive trucks too when they are in the lock mode sound to me like the car has the same feature...save the auto mode for snow or ice or dirt and use free mode for everyday driving also it would hurt to look inside the wheel wells for shiny spots where the tires could be rubbing...good luck
